Empowering Border Communities Through Sustainable Gardens

Our social innovation is simply to empower a community by giving them the opportunity to take control of their life. Proyecto S.U.A.V.E. (sustainable unity through vegetation empowerment) believes that a healthy lifestyle can open so many opportunities to the people and allow them to feel vigorous.  We believe that feeling energized and being active is the first step to a healthy lifestyle. We plan to take action by building an irrigation system that connects to multiple gardens throughout the canyon and implementing a health program based on age groups. This way the community can feel a sense of control over the food they eat. In this community, there are no stores that provide a source of proper nutrition. They have to take a bus to have better access to food, but if the canyon is flooded then the buses are not able to come. By the people having their own system, they can provide for themselves and the women of the community can start their own business venture by growing and selling the fruits and vegetables they grow.
